When Nick and Brooklyn Schnarr were told their unborn son’s condition was “off the charts bad,” they naturally feared the worst. In fact, they were told there was a 90% chance their son would either die shortly after birth, or have such severe cognitive impairments that his quality of life would be “hard to imagine.” Though they’d tried to plan for everything to come, they were truly unsure of what lied ahead of them with their baby’s arrival.

But when Brooklyn went into labor and their son Charlie was born, their whole story took a turn that no one could have expected…

About three or four months before Brooklyn was due to give birth, she and Nick were told that their son, Charlie, had severe hydrocephalus, or too much fluid in the brain. There was a 90% chance that he would either die shortly after birth, or have intense cognitive impairment.

“We had a meeting with palliative care regarding the use of life sustaining measures,” Nick said in a Facebook post. “And had detailed, awful, and emotional discussions about the ethics of when we might need to remove or cease such measures – which would result in the baby ‘passing away peacefully.'”

So the couple relocated to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which is where Charlie was eventually born via a c-section. Still, this is where things would get even more difficult…or it was supposed to.

Other than a mild ventricular enlargement, Charlie was growing healthier by the day. After a time in the infant ICU, Charlie was ready to come home.

“The doctors said, ‘we do not have and cannot come up with a medical explanation for what we’ve witnessed here.’ Somehow, his brain found a way to naturally ‘clear’ the blockage or re-route the fluid that was causing the oppressive ‘back-up’ of brain fluid. During the last week, I heard the word ‘divine intervention’ and ‘miracle’ more times than I could count,” Nick wrote on Facebook.

“I’m a practical person that certainly believes in science and medical technology, but I absolutely know, from the bottom of my heart, that God was involved in this,” Nick continued to say online. “I give ALL of the credit and glory to him. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers, notes of encouragement, cards, texts, emails, and outpouring of love.”

Thank goodness Charlie is okay. He really beat the odds!

I’m sure no one has to tell Nick and Brooklyn that Charlie is a fighter, but clearly there’s something special about him. Seems like miracles do happen after all.
