Brittany Maynard has exactly 25 days to live. She knows this because she has chosen the exact date in which she will pass away, painlessly and peacefully, in her own home in Oregon.

29-year-old Brittany was newly married when she was diagnosed with a serious brain tumor and told she had ten years to live. She didn’t have long to come to terms with the horrible news – soon after, doctors discovered she actually has a much more aggressive type of brain cancer, and has no more than six months. And that’s not all. Patients with this particular type of cancer suffer terrible pain in the months leading to their passing.

The decision Brittany and her husband made next is courageous beyond words.

To be faced with this tragic situation at such a young age is terribly sad. What a brave woman.

UPDATE: Brittany has ended her own life on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at her home in Portland, Oregon. She was 29. She wrote on her Facebook page:

“Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love. Today is the day I have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness, this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me … but would have taken so much more. The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers. I even have a ring of support around my bed as I type … Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!”

RIP, Brittany.
