DIY projects are a great way to spend your time. Not only do you get to create awesome, one-of-a-kind items that impress your friends and family, but it allows you to flex your creative muscles as well.
Brendan Stemp, a skilled woodworker who lives in Australia, spotted on old fence post on his property, and he knew he could bring it into his shop and turn it into something special.
It was a grueling process, but once you see the end result, you’ll realize it was well worth the effort!
Immersing yourself in a DIY project can be a great way to not only flex your creative muscles, but to impress your family and friends, as well. Brendan Stemp, a talented woodworker from Australia, had an old fence post in his yard, so he came up with a brilliant idea.
Brendan was practically a DIY expert when it came to wood. He had a garage full of hand tools and machinery that could turn any shape or size of wood into a beautiful piece of decorative art. Brendan was very excited about his plans for the post.
In his recorded video footage of the project, Brendan explained his vision. Even though the top of the post was badly eroded due to years of inclement weather, he could use epoxy resin to make the wood workable and complete his project. What exactly was he planning to do with material that looked like this?
Because he wanted to demonstrate his idea on camera, Brendan acquired a similar bundle of wood for the sole purpose of the woodworking lesson. The first thing he did was use thick masking tape to hold the wood together so it didn’t completely fall apart.
After he had the wooden bundle taped and secured, he used epoxy glue to affix the entire thing onto a thin piece of wood to stabilize it. He used epoxy glue because it was the best substance to fill in the small cracks at the base.
As you can see, the type of wood Brendan used featured many small nooks that, without the appropriate binding agent, would have caused the entire bundle to detach from the rounded base during the process…
After the wooden base was secured with epoxy glue, Brendan brought the wood over to his bandsaw. He carefully used the saw to cut certain pieces off the entire chunk so the sides were as smooth and round as possible.
Now that Brendan was finished using the saw, he needed to cover the entire piece of wood in a material that wouldn’t allow the epoxy resin to leak out after he poured it into the top. He chose everyone’s favorite adhesive—duct tape—to get the job done.
Brendan carefully stretched the duct tape around the entire piece of wood, making sure he left every square inch covered. He couldn’t risk any of the resin leaking out of his project and destroying it.
Even after he was done taping up the base of the wood, Brendan put an additional layer of scotch tape over all of the air bubbles that formed in the duct tape. Brendan knew how thorough he had to be when working with epoxy glue.
Now, it was finally time to start adding the epoxy resin to the wood. Brendan used a clear solid-cast resin. He had worked with many different resins in the past, and this was the type he felt was the most efficient.
One detail Brendan noticed before he began pouring the resin into his project were the gaps between the wood. Rather than dump the resin into any large openings, which would cause it to pool up, he simply shoved excess sticks inside to take up the room.
After all the gaps were filled, Brendan then slowly started pouring the epoxy resin into the wood. He made sure to disperse it evenly so it didn’t glob up on one side while the opposite side was dry and subjected to breakage.
After the epoxy resin was carefully poured into the duct-taped wooden slab, Brendan placed the whole thing into a wood-stabilizing vacuum chamber in his garage. This piece of machinery ensured the wood would become firm and moisture resistant.
Now keep in mind, the epoxy resin step to this process was actually done dozens of times over the course of several months. Brendan would pour a little bit in at a time, and then he would place the wood into the stabilizer. Several months later, and the wood was finally ready.
Next, it was time for Brendan to start shaping the block. He attached the block to a hollowing tool. Here, it would spin around at incredibly high speeds, and the metal head would slowly shave away the block’s layers.
Little by little, the wood was starting to take the shape Brendan envisioned from the very beginning. Months of work was finally coming to an end. There was still more labor to put in, but at least Brendan could now see the finish line…
Now that the outside of the wood was pretty much the shape he wanted, Brendan needed to burrow a deep hole in the center. He attached a large drill bit to his hollower and slowly began carving out the center area…
Once the drill bit was finished carving a hole deep enough directly in the center of the wood, Brendan started slowly shaving into the sides to create a large circular opening. Can you guess by now what his final project going to be?
It takes a certain kind of person to put this much effort into a DIY project, but with the right tools and motivation, anyone can do it. Watch the video below to see the final few steps of the process. You’ll be floored by Brendan’s final product!
