We all have dreams of just walking out of the office one day, hitting the road, and never turning back. It’s this romantic vision of the open road that has made everything from On The Road to “Born to Run” so appealing.

And it’s just what makes Mike Hudson’s journey so awesome. After saving some money by working on offshore gas platforms in the North Sea, Mike quit his job to pursue his dream and he hasn’t looked back since.

Mike’s crazy dream started with the purchasing of this rusty van. Yet it’s what he did with it that’s so wild: He converted it into his new home and hit the road.

This is what it looked like on the inside when he first bought it.

He had to start his conversion by dealing with all of the rust.

Some metal paint did the trick…

Along with some fiberglass patches.

Then, it was time to put new floor in place. This started with glueing the wooden base-board down.

Next, a layer of faux-wood vinyl was placed on top to give it a nice finish.

The walls were next.

And the roofing, of course!

Once the frame was set, the cladding/siding could be placed.

With all of that complete, the bathroom was next on the list.

And every shower needs a drain.

The frame was ready to be placed.

With the base in, the sides could be placed around it.

Now we’re getting somewhere!

How cool is that?

Oh yeah, Mike needed somewhere to sleep. His solution? A sofa-bed!

It had to look nice, though.

Next was the kitchen.

Which needed some cabinets and drawers.

Mike also had a small closet space installed that doubles as the hot water heater for his shower.

Gotta have a sound-system, too!

Solar panels were put in place to power everything when the van is off.

Time to get comfortable!

Maybe some dinner?

Or light reading?

With the van conversion complete, Mike was ready for the biggest adventure of his life.

And he had the wheels to make it a reality!

That van is nicer than most apartments! Mike is currently traveling all over Europe, enjoying the road, and not missing that job at all. If you want to hear more about his travels, you can visit his website.
