Some of us aren’t too proud to admit that our selfies are more like 20-minute photo shoots: we’ll easily snap a dozen photos per second if it means getting the perfect angle or expression. Naturally, when we’re so focused on ourselves, we tend to forget what’s going on in the background.

So when one teen took a selfie while riding in the car with her mother, she initially didn’t pay much attention to it. It wasn’t until later, when she was scrolling through her photos, that she noticed something terrifying…

Maryland resident Melissa Kurtz, 48, was driving to a beauty pageant with her 13-year-old daughter, Harper, when they decided to snap some selfies. Melissa’s turned out fine, but when it was Harper’s turn to take a photo, she captured much more than a selfie…

Harper took this selfie, and didn’t give it much thought. It wasn’t until Melissa looked at it later that she noticed something frightening: there appeared to be a boy in the backseat, reaching towards Harper!

The weird thing is that no one else was in the car with them. Melissa soon learned that a boy had died in a car crash on that part of the highway just a year earlier. Perhaps he was trying to protect Harper?

As much as most people would find it hard to believe, that sure looks a lot like a little boy in the backseat behind Harper! What other explanation could there be?
