Who doesn’t love delicious and nutritious blueberries? Not only do they serve as the perfect on-the-go snack, but they’re also rich in antioxidants and vitamins. They’re even considered by many to be a superfood.

If you love blueberries as a snack, in pancakes or in your smoothies, then growing them yourself is a great idea. This simple DIY guide to growing delicious blueberries in your own garden will definitely come in handy. Just see for yourself!

1. Find the perfect spot

The first step to growing your own blueberries is finding the perfect spot in your garden. Opt for a sunny location with good soil. This will allow for the blueberry bush to enter the stage of photosynthesis.

2. Give them room

Make sure that your blueberry bushes have plenty of room to grow — up to 6-feet, so as not to cramp the plants. If you plan on growing multiple plants at the same time then you should allow for 2-3 feet between each bush.

3. When you’ll plant them

While it varies upon geographic location, you’ll most likely want to plant your blueberry bush in the spring, as it will be ready for harvesting by July.

4. Mulching

Sawdust is the premium mulch you will use to grow blueberries. Although you could also opt for rind mulch, pine bark, or simply grass trimmings. You’ll want to apply 2-4 inches of mulch on top of the soil.

5. Pruning

To achieve maximum fruit growth, pruning is an absolute must. All you’ll need is a pair of strong scissors or clippers to cut back the extended and dead branches. This will encourage more berries to grow. Also, be sure to remove excess branches from the base of the plant, as they are unnecessary.

6. Fertilization

Perhaps the most important part of growing your blueberries and final step, is using proper fertilization. To do this, you’re going to want to use organic fertilizer, not only because it’s healthier and better for the environment, but because non-organic ones will destroy your plant. There is no need to continue using fertilization afterward.

Finally, it’s time to sit back and wait for your blueberries to grow in the summer time!
