Unfortunately, having a baby is more difficult for some couples than it is for others. As people get older, their ability to conceive decreases dramatically, and it can eventually lead to a great deal of emotional pain for would-be parents.
Ashley and Tyson Gardner of Utah know that struggle all too well. After trying to conceive for eight years, they’d all but given up hope that they would ever have a baby of their own.
When they saw the results of their latest sonogram, however, they instantly broke down…
For some couples, getting pregnant is a breeze, while for others, things aren’t so simple. Utah couple Ashley and Tyson Gardner were certainly more familiar with the latter; they’d tried to conceive for eight years, but they simply had no success.
Fertility doctors eventually discovered that Ashley suffered from a condition known as endometriosis, which causes cells that would normally be housed in the womb to grow in other random places of the human body.
Additionally, endometriosis prevents the woman’s egg from traveling through the fallopian tube, which makes egg fertilization impossible. So, after saving up all their money, the couple decided to try their hand at in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In vitro fertilization was an extremely expensive process and it didn’t always work, but the couple was willing to try anything they could to become pregnant and start their family. Every morning, Ashley had to receive painful injections that would boost the chances of her fertility. Additionally, she had to visit her doctor often to have blood work and ultrasounds.
To increase her pregnancy chances, Ashley also began taking a daily vitamin as well as frequent pain relievers, since a side effect of in vitro fertilization injections were massive headaches. Nevertheless, she persisted!
The actual process of the in vitro fertilization took all of one month. As the end finally approached, Ashley and Tyson grew incredibly excited. When the doctors went in to perform the egg retrieval, they found that Ashley had 16 in total…
The next step was for the doctors to perform the egg fertilization itself. Once the sperm was combined with the egg outside of the body, the doctors could begin the process of egg implantation. That’s when the fertilized egg would be placed in the womb with the hopes of maturing—and, ultimately, resulting in a baby.
For most couples going through the IVF process, doctors will freeze any additional healthy embryos created during the fertilization process so they can be used if the first try doesn’t work. Ashley and Tyson only had two, so there wasn’t much room for error.
Once the implantation was completed, further blood work was conducted to see if it had worked. Following that, it was a waiting game. Ashley and Tyson endured an entire week of waiting for the blood results. All they could do was hope for the best…
Ashley and Tyson knew everything that was at stake, so to commemorate the occasion, they hired a photographer to take pictures of them opening their results. As the photo below revealed—after eight long years of trying—they were pregnant!
The next step was to have an ultrasound. But when they visited the doctor for their seven-week checkup, they received truly staggering news: both embryos had split, resulting in two separate sets of twins!
Still, the cautious parents didn’t want to celebrate just yet. “We need all the love and support we can get,” Ashley wrote on her pregnancy blog. “Please know that I am extremely high risk and things can change at a moment’s notice for us.”
Soon, Ashley and Tyson’s story began spreading like wildfire on social media. People everywhere were inspired by their journey and wanted to show as much love and support for them as possible. They were even featured on an episode of Good Morning America.
Then, after nine months, on December 29, 2014, Ashley gave birth to four healthy girls! They were named Esme, Indie, Scarlett, and Evangeline. Now, the couple can’t help but feel incredibly lucky and thankful for everything they’ve been through.
It certainly took some adjusting for them to get used to caring of four children, but they were more than up to the challenge. “As a first-time dad, it’s been a roller coaster of emotions from the beginning. It will certainly be a challenge, but we’re up to it and we’re confident,” Tyson said.
Since their girls were born, the family has captured the attention of TV network TLC, going as far as to be featured on a documentary series that follows parents in their first year of parenthood. Now, they’re enjoying their time together and they’re thankful for the way things turned out in the end!
Wow! Having to go through so much to start their family is truly heartbreaking, but thankfully, now they have the children they had always dreamed of.
