Birthday cakes are a very sweet tradition, but what do you serve the person who doesn’t eat desserts? Whether it’s due to allergies or a simple lack of sweet tooth, some folks just don’t like cake.

In Japan, they’ve come up with a solution that’s just as delicious and just as festive as a cake, minus any of the sweet stuff. Blasphemous, I know. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet… the meat cake!

More and more grilled meat restaurants in Japan are offering these designer platters of raw meat served to celebrate special occasions. They are awesome to look at, and even better to eat — once you cook them up, of course.

The meat platters come in a wide variety of designs. This festive display is even topped with a sparkler!
