Hijacking a police cruiser is the sort of crime that normally carries a hefty punishment. You don’t mess with the cops and you definitely don’t commandeer their vehicles.

Yet, when officers at Ohio’s Parma Police Department discovered that someone had done just that to one of their cars, they decided to something different.

Recently, officers noticed that one of their backup cruisers was being taken over by a certain interloper. But instead of removing her, they let her stay.

That’s because this little squatter was actually a sweet mama Mourning Dove!

Instead of evicting their newfound tenant, the officers built her a little shelter to keep her nest and eggs out of the rain.

They didn’t want to disturb her or her babies, so they kept replacing the covering to keep them dry.

“Our officers are human beings just like anyone else,” police spokesperson, Kevin Riley, said. “We care for all lives human and animal so the officers took a carrier to this bird, which they nicknamed Gerty, is taken care of and can take care of her young in the cruiser.”

I’m so glad that they decided to take it easy with Gerty. She’s a first-time offender after all, and the little DIY umbrella house is such a cute idea! Way to go, Parma PD! You guys rule.
