Remember the first time some little boy tugged on your pigtails? How about the first time you passed someone a note asking if they like liked you? Childhood crushes are a huge part of growing up, but usually, that’s all they are: crushes that fade with the passing of time.

Two preschool classmates, Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel, spent their school days playing together and napping together. They were quintessential childhood sweethearts. But as the duo grew apart over the years, they never could shake their fond thoughts of the other…

Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheel attended preschool together in Phoenix, Arizona. At first, they were just classmates, playing in large groups together, but never really crossing paths. Then, one day, Matt spotted Laura on the playground.

From that moment forward, Matt only had eyes for Laura. Wherever she was on the playground, Matt wasn’t too far behind her. Three-year-old Laura, however, was not so enamored.

Laura originally thought Matt was just some silly kid who would follow her on the playground, but eventually, she noticed his cheerful and inviting personality. From that day on, they were the best of friends.

The pair were inseparable. They would chase one another around the playground, fake sleep and giggle together during nap time, and always buddy up on field trips. Their parents and teachers quickly noticed how well the two got along.

Outside of school, they loved watching Disney movies and innocently holding each other during the scary parts. Their parents and teachers just chalked it up to a really sweet friendship, but Matt had something else in mind.

Matt had a crush on Laura. He tried to impress her by reciting famous lines from the Lion King, which was their favorite movie, and by breaking open the piñata on Cinco De Mayo. In return, Laura taught Matt how to draw rolling hills and how to eat string cheese.

They only wanted to spend time with one another. Matt even stood up in front of the class and told themhe was going to marry Laura one day. Their classmates laughed, but they didn’t care.

They had play dates every weekend and attended each other’s birthday parties. Unfortunately, preschool was over soon enough. The two would need to face the realities of kindergarten.

Sadly, Matt and Laura’s parents sent their children to different elementary schools. This made it difficult for Matt and Laura to see each other. Their parents made the effort to set up play dates every now and then, but it was challenging to keep up.

Eventually, Matt and Laura lost touch completely. Their only connection to one another was their families sending holiday cards every December.

Years passed. Matt and Laura grew up, and their excitement to receive their Christmas cards dwindled. It had been so long since they actually saw one another, and the teenagers had other things on their minds. But, neither of them forgot the other.

Matt and Laura were now both freshmen in high school, and life was going well or both. They were making new friends and getting involved in extracurricular activities, but fate, it seemed, wasn’t done with them yet…

One day, Laura was hanging out with her friend and scrolling through her phone when she recognized something from the past. Right there in her friend’s contact list was Matt Grodsky’s name! She couldn’t believe her eyes. She asked her friend how she knew him.

As it turned out, Laura’s friend was determined to reconnect Laura with Matt. Laura was hesitant at first because it’d been so long since they’d seen each other. They were all just getting used to their freshman year.

But Laura’s friend went ahead and gave Matt Laura’s number anyway. Matt texted Laura and asked her to meet up. She agreed and met him at the movie theater like old times, while wondering if the two had anything left in common.

Their chemistry was strong and the attraction was instant. Within two weeks they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. They hung out every weekend, attended each other’s proms, and spent the next four years together. Until…

It was time for them to go away to college. Laura enrolled at Northern Arizona University and Matt went to Columbia College in Chicago. They both weren’t sure if they were going to be able to make long distance work, but they were determined to try.

It wasn’t easy having to be apart, but they used FaceTime and social media to stay connected. They even planned out a schedule to see each other as often as possible. The longest period of time they went without seeing each other was 20 weeks.

They made it through their first three years of college and were gearing up to enter their senior year in 2015. Before they returned to college, Matt wanted to do something really special for Laura.

He wanted to surprise her with a picnic at a very special place. She noticed that he was a little nervous during the drive over, but when they arrived she realized why.

He’d taken her to their preschool! Laura’s face lit up. It was so sweet, she thought, that Matt wanted to celebrate them entering their last year of college where it all began. Little did Laura know, Matt had something else planned for her.

They got out of the car and Matt got down on one knee and asked, “Will you marry me?” From the time when he was three years old, he told his classmates he would marry her; on that day, he fulfilled his promise.

Of course, Laura said yes! Overjoyed with love, the newly engaged couple enjoyed their picnic filled with snacks, sparkling cider, and wedding magazines. Although they needed to spend just one more year apart, it made it easier knowing they would spend a lifetime together.

In December of 2016, Matt and Laura said, “I do” at the Arizona Historical Society. Their first dance was to Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” a symbol of their preschool days and young love.

News of their love story spread across the internet like wildfire. They were asked for interviews; pictures of them as children were all over social media. Actor Tyrese Gibson was touched by their story and paid for a weekend get-away to Miami for the lovebirds.

As for the husband and wife now? They said they wanted kids in the future, but as of 2018, they just wanted to nurture their little family: Matt, Laura, and new pup Kirby.
