With all the craziness that’s going on in the world in this day and age, airport security has to be taken seriously. Even though flying is one of the safest ways to travel, statistically speaking, it’s almost always a disaster when a suspicious passenger sneaks onto a plane with dangerous materials.

Even when said passenger is as harmless and innocent-looking as an 80-year-old woman, exceptions cannot be made. It’s simply not worth the risk, not to mention the fact that it can be unfair.

One woman in South Carolina thought that she would have no problem getting onto a plane. After all, she relied on a cane to walk—how much harm could she cause? Apparently a lot… because she was carrying a secret weapon.

An 80-year-old woman at the Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina had a strange experience as she tried to pass through security. Though she relied on a cane to walk, she didn’t think she’d have a problem getting through the metal detectors. As it turned out, the woman’s seemingly ordinary cane was hiding a dangerous secret…

Believe it or not, it was a sword. Pulling and twisting on the beautiful bronze handle revealed the weapon. “She had no it clue it was in there,” said TSA regional spokesman Mark Howell.

The cane was a gift from her son. Unfortunately, she needed to make her flight in time and was forced to allow security to confiscate it. Howell admitted this was not an entirely unique incident: because canes are often purchased at thrift stores, many people buy them without knowing that they might be hiding something suspicious!

It’s amazing that the woman didn’t know that she was carrying a sword around this whole time, but you can’t really blame her. Who would think to check such a common item for a weapon?
