The urge to travel is a feeling that hits everyone at different times. Whether you’re a graduate who wants to take the year off, an artist seeking inspiration, or a parent in desperate need of a break, the travel bug is going to sneak up on you at some point or another.
When that wanderlust does come calling, however, you should really know what you’re getting yourself into—and remember that not every travel photo you see on Google is true to life. In fact, our expectations of faraway places are often the complete opposite of their reality…
1. Great Wall of China.
Not so great.
2. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy.
Everybody’s doing it.
3. The Mona Lisa.
Good luck getting a photo of her!
4. The Maldives.
At least there’s plenty of material for “found object” art projects…
5. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
There’s a beach hiding under there somewhere…
6. Venice, Italy.
Psh! Canal traffic, amirite?
7. Santorini, Greece.
Not for the claustrophobic.
8. Virtually any ski trip.
We’ll stick to the bunny slopes, thanks.
Guess we’ll just… stand here.
10. Pyramids of Giza, Egypt.
At least you’ll work on your tan?
11. Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy.
Good luck hearing the bubbling fountain over all those people.
12. Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England.
More like Crowdhenge.
13. Mount Everest, Nepal.
As if climbing the peaks weren’t dangerous enough…
14. Spanish Steps, Rome, Italy.
Putting the lunching ladies of Gossip Girl to shame.
15. The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen.
“Little” is right…
To be fair, every travel photo is going to look a heck of a lot better when it’s captured by a professional photographer. Still, it’s always good to remember that you should look before you leap when it comes to a pricey vacation!
