While a lot of different things go into planning a party, the food should always be a top priority. After all, a good spread can really make or break a get-together! That’s exactly why everyone was so disgusted when they found out Katherine Dey was planning to serve a giant cockroach at her party.

While everyone gagged at the thought, they soon realized that there was more to the menu than met the eye. Yes, that was a cockroach on the table, and yes, Katherine was definitely planning to eat it. But as her guests soon learned, this choice of dessert was hiding a big secret…

Food should always be a top priority for any party. People love to eat as they socialize, so it’s important to prepare a good spread. That’s extra true when it comes to dessert! There’s a reason some genius invented the birthday cake, after all.

So when Katherine Dey began planning a big party at her home, she knew she needed to bring the goods. But soon word got out that she wanted to treat everyone to a decidedly unusual dessert…

Yes—Katherine planned to serve a giant bug. And not just any bug: a cockroach. Her guests didn’t believe it at first, but when they walked into her home and saw this sitting on her countertop, they couldn’t believe their eyes…

Suddenly, huge knife in hand, Katherine began slicing right into the insect’s back! The guests gasped in horror. No one had showed up to the party expecting this kind of bizarre show.

Then, Katherine finally revealed the truth—and all of her guests breathed a huge sigh of relief. As it turned out, she had made an amazing cake that simply looked like a cockroach! But how—or why, for that matter?

How exactly did Katherine make such an amazing, and startling, cake? Well, that was easy! She first made two circular chocolate cakes, like this one pictured. Using a sharp knife, she carved an oval shape into the cake.

Then, she rearranged the halves of the cake to form the base of her deliciously monstrous creation. It’s wild to think that this simple piece would soon become that giant cake-roach she served to her guests…

For the next step, Katherine used a large metal spoon to scrape out the inside of the chocolate oval, leaving a hollow center. She needed to be careful not to break through the bottom or else she’d have to start over again.

She did this with both cakes. Then, she glazed each half with chocolate icing and placed them on her cutting board. Now it was time to prepare the cream filling that would act as the “guts” of the bug!

As she applied the cream filling, Katherine probably dreamed of what her guests reactions would be to her buggy dessert. Clearly, she was hoping they would enjoy it… after they freaked out a little.

She had to be careful for the next step. She picked up one half of the cake and flipped it directly on top of the other, forming a sort of rounded shape with the cream in the middle. Then, it was time for the fun stuff…

With the cake halves placed on top of each other, Katherine covered the entire thing with another thick layer of chocolate icing. She needed the surface to be smooth so she could really start making this bug look ready for a party.

After the chocolate icing was smoothed out and the cake itself was sturdy, Katherine took thick strips of white fondant and wrapped them around the base. These strips would help support the icing Katherine put on next.

Draping the fondant over the cake center, she trimmed the edges so the sheets were the exact same size as the dessert. It was finally taking form, and she couldn’t wait until everyone saw her finished product!

The next part of the cake-making process was assembling the exoskeleton of the cake-roach. Katherine added overlapping layers onto the top of the cake and trimmed the edges so they fit perfectly. Can you see how the “shell” was forming?

Now it was time add the six legs to the body. Finally, the cockroach was coming alive! The legs were made of the same kind of fondant that coated the outside of the chocolate cake, and they really helped the final product look like the real deal.

After the legs were secured to the cockroach’s body, it was time to put on the antennae. The two skewers Katherine used were the only parts of the cake that weren’t edible. The rest, however, was going to be delicious. Would her guests agree?

After the antennae were in place, the entire cake was almost complete. It was time for Katherine to showcase her artistic talent and start painting the roach to give it the realistic look that she knew would freak everyone out!

Using edible paint, Katherine willed her cake-roach into existence. Like some sort of baking-obsessed Doctor Frankenstein, she worked tirelessly to make this thing as lifelike as possible.

Katherine put a lot of time and energy into making this dessert—just see the entire process in action below! Obviously, this baker certainly knows how to wow people with her cakes, but would you want to eat anything like this?

No matter how delicious this might be, most people still probably couldn’t stomach it. Then again, some might say this is the only cockroach people would be okay with showing up to a party!
