Prince Harry Shares His Regret Over Baby Archie's First Words

A baby’s first words are supposed to fill a parent’s heart with joy. Sadly, this wasn’t exactly the case for Prince Harry. While making one of several TV appearances in 2021, the royal opened up about Archie’s first words – and revealed to the whole world that this particular milestone had been tinged with sadness.

Two times a dad

Harry was speaking during a particularly eventful period for himself and wife Meghan Markle. Just a few weeks after the interview, the pair became proud parents for a second time. And as with everything involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the name that they gave to their daughter was pored over by the press.

The meaning of Lilibet

The apparently acutely newsworthy pair christened their second-born Lilibet “Lilli” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. Of course, it was obvious that Harry’s late mother, the Princess of Wales, had inspired the baby’s middle name. But unless you were familiar with the history of royal family nicknames, the choice of Lilibet was a little more intriguing.

The Queen's nickname

Turns out that Lilibet has been the Queen’s nickname within the royal family since she was a youngster. King George VI, the monarch’s father, is quoted as once saying, “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.” Even the late Prince Philip used to refer to his wife of 73 years by her more casual moniker.

Never to meet

Sadly, the Queen’s husband never got to see the great-grandchild named in honor of his wife. The Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99, just two months before Lilibet was welcomed into the world. Harry subsequently paid a heartfelt tribute to his grandfather in an official statement, describing him as a “man of service, honor and great humor.”
