Few moments in history come close to the horror and tragedy of the Holocaust. When Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime rose to power, their creation of concentration camps ultimately enslaved and murdered millions of Jews and other minorities. The largest of these camps was Auschwitz, where more than a million people were systematically killed.

Recently, Holocaust survivor Roman Kent and the BBC sent a drone over Auschwitz to explore the historical site. What they found is truly heartbreaking.

Perhaps the most unsettling part of the video is this sign. The words “Arbeit Macht Frei” translate to “work sets you free,” a cruel joke for the prisoners entering the camp.

It’s haunting to see the remains of a place marked by such evil, but it’s a necessary, sobering experience to learn about what happened here. As has often been said, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
