The word “wise” brings one particular animal to mind — the mystical old owl. For ages, these wizened creatures symbolized great knowledge and wisdom in fiction and fables, serving as an omen or a sign of things to come.

But if you look into the eyes of a particular feathered-covered sage, you’ll see a lot more than just wisdom.

Zeus the Western Screech Owl was rescued by a couple in California when he flew into their home and hit his head, falling onto their porch in a daze.blind-owl-2Imgur

Zeus is completely blind… and his eyes look like night sky. blind-owl-1Imgur

His beautiful eyes are given their appearance because he was born without lenses or irises. The tiny specks that look like stars are probably vitreous strands, or clumps of collagen that float in the eye’s jelly.

After getting the all-clear from the vet, Zeus moved to his safe new home at the Wildlife Learning Centerblind-owl-3Imgur

Because of his blindness, he can’t be released back into the wild. But he doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he seems relieved to have found safety. blind-owl-4Imgur

Even though Zeus can’t see, it stills feels like he’s looking right through you.
