Scientists say that the earth is approximately 4.543 billion years old, and as such, we still have a lot to learn about our planet’s history. Sure, fossils and other remains can speak volumes about how the earth used to be, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve learned all there is to know about ancient or prehistoric life.

Now, people everywhere are fascinated by an odd creature found in the Siberian permafrost that some believe could be a long-extinct species. It’s a fascinating mystery that has people from around the world guessing what it might be.

In the Siberian town of Udachny, diamond miners found this strange, mummified creature that they’ve dubbed the “monster mummy.”

The creature is perfectly preserved, with claws, fangs, and teeth still intact. This is due to Udachny’s sub-arctic temperatures, ranging from -110.48 to -95.36 Fahrenheit.

Its claws, fangs, and teeth are still intact, as is an extremely powerful jaw. The miners initially suspected that the monster mummy could be a previously undiscovered dinosaur…

However, animal experts have other ideas. Scientists think that it could be a mammal in the Mustiladae family of carnivores, such as a wolverine.

Another member of the Mustilidae family that the monster mummy could be is the marten.

There’s also the possibility that the monster mummy is actually a young bear.

Udachny translates to “lucky” or “successful” in Russian, and indeed it was a stroke of luck that these Siberian miners found something even more priceless than the diamonds that they were searching for. For further study, the mummy was taken to Yakutsk, the capital city of the region. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about this fascinating creature soon!
