Every American State Ranked From Most To Least Educated

What does it mean to be educated? Obviously, intelligence isn’t dependent on degrees and schooling: some of the smartest people in the world may have never stepped foot inside a classroom. That said, what about those who have dedicated years of their lives to academia? A team of experts at WalletHub compiled a ranking of the most- to least-educated states in the U.S., and you may be surprised to see where your home state falls!

1. Massachusetts

Does it come as a surprise that Massachusetts is the most-educated state in the country? After all, this is the home of Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From the historic cobbled streets of Boston to the ivy-covered walls of Cambridge, Massachusetts’ bookish atmosphere isn’t an act: 48 percent of adults reported having a bachelor’s degree in 2021.

2. Maryland

If you’re suddenly in need of a good lawyer, veterinarian, or doctor, then head on over to Maryland. Though there are talented professionals in every state, Maryland has the second-highest percentage of people with a graduate or professional degree in the US, according to WalletHub. Importantly, it ranks #1 for quality of education.

3. Connecticut

With the hallowed halls of Yale at its center, how could Connecticut not rank highly on this list? The state boasts other well-regarded schools — Wesleyan and the United States Coast Guard Academy among them — so it’s no surprise that a whopping 42 percent of people in Connecticut reported having a bachelor’s degree in 2021.

4. Colorado

There’s a lot more going on in the Rocky Mountains than you’d think! According to WalletHub’s 2022 ranking of the most-educated states, Colorado is home to the highest percentage of adults with an associate degree. One could say that Coloradans are definitely climbing the mountain of success — but perhaps one shouldn’t.
