Farmer Growing 'The World's Largest Vegetables' Reveals The Secrets About His Crops

Peter Glazebrook was growing giant veggies before it was cool, so when a competition just a few towns over began to take the world by storm, he just had to jump in. For almost 30 years, people have been in awe of his ginormous creations, begging the question: how does he do it?! After a brilliant career within the closed-off community of giant vegetable growers, Peter recounted how he's found such colossal success.

Born For This

Since Peter was raised by farmers, cultivating vegetables was, as he put it, "in his blood." So as the sport of goliath produce was growing itself, Peter was already surging ahead of the competition.

Starting At the Pub

It all began over at a pub in South Wales, miles away from Peter. Back in the '80s, a group of half-drunk locals were arguing about who could grow the biggest pumpkins. The friendly rivalry between the men and their squash wouldn't stay between them for long, for word of their competition would eventually reach Peter.

Fast Growth

As the pumpkins grew larger each year, it proved impossible to fit them into the pub, and as the competition became more public, people from all around the country began to join in. Of course, with all that attention came scoffs and jeers from those who didn't understand. But when Peter learned about it, he became adamant about competing.

Part-Time Gardener

Although he didn't follow in his farmer parents' footsteps in terms of his profession, Peter loved growing his own vegetables. In between his shifts as a building surveyor, he tended to his own backyard garden, which was so impressive in size that his cousin challenged him to a bold dare.
