While you’re probably never going to meet an actual unicorn, the world is still home to some pretty amazing creatures, ones which, if you saw them, you might just think were magic.

When photographer Shaun Jeffers entered a cave in New Zealand, he felt immediately like he was in the presence of something otherworldly, but the creatures he found were 100% real, and 100% stunning.

New Zealand, Waitomo’s Ruakuri Cave is more than just an underground passageway. It’s home to some of the most incredible creatures on Earth.

Each of the photos used a long exposure to capture the dim light in the cave. Every exposure was between 30 seconds and 6 minutes.

On top of the technical aspects, Shaun had to brave the elements to make the images possible as well.

“To achieve the shots, it required me to submerge myself and my tripod in cold water for up to 6-8 hours a day,” Jeffers said.
