Nicole Kidman Was Asked About Her Marriage To Tom Cruise, And Her Blunt Response Spoke Volumes

From the outside looking in, it may seem as though Nicole Kidman’s life is perfect. She’s had an epic career spanning more than 40 years, she’s in a loving relationship, and she’s got four wonderful children. Yet her on-screen success has not protected the actress from enduring many of the personal challenges that face us ordinary folk on a daily basis, too. In a recent interview with British newspaper The Guardian, Kidman reflected frankly on the relationship and personal issues that have peppered an illustrious career.

The interview

In December 2021 journalist Eva Wiseman sat down to speak with the silver-screen legend. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causing much uncertainty, the interview was confined to a video call, with Kidman signing in from New York City. And while the intended face-to-face meeting in London couldn’t take place, the virtual nature of the discussion didn’t prevent Kidman from making some stirring reflections on her personal struggles.

Why now?

The opportunity to interview the star was no coincidence; Kidman was promoting her new movie Being the Ricardos, a biographical film detailing the relationship between I Love Lucy stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It’s tipped to be in the running for various categories at the next Oscars, but the actress was much keener to talk about the film’s prevailing themes.

Drawing parallels

As a movie about family, marriage, gender, and power dynamics, Being the Ricardos resonated with Kidman in a highly personal way. “That’s my whole life. I love that you can describe the film, and then it correlates to my life. Isn’t that fantastic?” she reflected. And the actress wasn’t shy about detailing the ways in which the film reflected her own personal and career challenges.

The balancing act

In addition to managing her on-screen career, Kidman is the mother of four children — Sunday and Faith, who she had with husband Keith Urban, and Connor and Isabella, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise. While balancing work and family had always been tough, it was when she gave birth in her 40s to her youngest daughter that the film industry became particularly brutal.
