When it comes to the most common fears that people have. Drowning is generally at the top of the list, and with good reason. Few things are more terrifying to think about.
And to make matters worse, we recently found out that you don’t even have to be in the water to drown, and children are especially vulnerable. Just ask mother Cassandra Jackson.
Everyone knows that you can drown in the pool, but did you know that you don’t even have to be in the water for that to happen? It’s true.
Just ask Cassandra Jackson.
Her 10-year-old son Johnny had spent most of the day playing in the family’s pool.
Johnny went to bed like usual. But he would never wake up again. The cause of his death was something called ‘secondary drowning’.
Secondary drowning is caused when a person inhales even a small amount of water into their lungs, lowering their supply of oxygen.
It might be less obvious than traditional drowning but it is just as deadly and there are definite signs to watch out for.
It can even happen after something as simple as a shower or bath and symptoms may take up to 72 hours to show.
They can include extreme exhaustion, mood swings, or unexplained irritability. They may also complain about chest pain or difficulty breathing.
If you notice any of these, take your child to the hospital immediately. It could mean the difference between life and death.
I had no idea that my child could be out of the pool for hours and still drown. This is truly terrifying.
