Understanding The Meanings Behind Common Dog Behaviors

Has your dog or cat ever done anything totally bizarre — but in a really cute way? Maybe they tilt their heads just so when you talk to them, or they start pawing you completely out of nowhere. And you’re probably left wondering, “Why the heck do they do that?” Well, scientists have broken down the odd behaviors our fluffy friends exhibit, and it turns out there is a rhyme and reason for their quirks. Now you’ll never have to wonder why your best bud follows you everywhere — yes, even to the bathroom!

1. Licking your face

If a dog approaches you and just starts licking your face, it’s not because you have food on your cheek. Well, that could be one reason, but they’re more likely to be showing you that they come in peace. You can try and reciprocate the gesture, but that may be a little odd...

2. Yawning

When humans yawn, it’s a physical response to being tired or bored. And dogs will yawn when they’re tired, yes, but they’ll also do so to express passive behavior in a group. If a dog feels comfortable, yawning is their way to say they aren’t aggressive and everything is cool.

3. Sitting in boxes

Although cats may be adorable, they’re also natural predators, and so they like to hide in places where they can observe others. Boxes help them do that, which is why they prefer cardboard to the very expensive bed you bought them. The enclosed space makes them feel more comfortable and stress-free!

4. Rolling in smells

If a dog picks up an interesting scent, they’ll roll around in it so that it attaches itself to them. That’s why they love the stinkiest smells! It’s believed that this is a leftover trait from their wolf ancestors, who would bring scents back to their pack. Basically, you’re family, and your dog just wants to share what they found with you — whether you like it or not!
