Having sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, Shania Twain is still the highest-selling female country artist of all time. That fact is even more impressive when you consider that the Canadian singer took a break from the music industry for 15 years right at the peak of her success. So why did the “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” hitmaker step out of the spotlight for so long?
Attracting attention
Twain’s path to fame began in 1993 when she released her self-titled debut album. Although the LP failed to catch the public’s interest, it did attract the attention of Mutt Lange. The record producer not only forged a working relationship with Twain, but he ended up walking down the aisle with her, too.
The Woman in Me
Lange and Twain’s first collaborative effort, 1995’s The Woman in Me, spawned several country hits, sold over 12 million copies, and even picked up a Grammy! Unsurprisingly, the pair continued to mix business with pleasure for its follow-up. And 1997’s Come on Over would prove to be even more successful.
Come on Over
Yes, thanks to hits such as “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “You’re Still the One,” Twain’s third LP became something of a blockbuster. It shifted a whopping 40 million copies worldwide, spent nearly a year at the top of the country charts, and is still one of the biggest-selling albums ever! Then 2002’s Up! continued Twain’s run of success; a 2004 Greatest Hits suggested she was about to enter a new chapter in her career.
Daytime soap opera
But then things went strangely quiet. Well, on the music front anyway. In 2008 Twain found herself in the tabloids thanks to the kind of relationship drama you’d expect from a daytime soap opera. Firstly, the Canadian discovered that husband Lange had been cheating on her with BFF and personal assistant Marie-Anne Thiébaud.
